FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • An immersive performance experience is where the audience enters into the world of the show. Rather than being separate, and watching the drama unfold on a stage, in immersive performance you are in the world itself. There is no spatial divide between you, the performer and the world and setting of the show. With Portal, you will be asked to be active in this world, able to make clear choices that determine outcomes and that open or close certain possibilities.

  • We’re so excited you’ll be joining us on June 8th in Valle Crucis for the premiere of the Luminaries Ball! Now, a few notes regarding this performance:

    1) Please be on time. Tickets will start being scanned at 6:30p, and doors open promptly at 7p. The action commences right away, so it’s important you are on time so you don’t miss anything!

    2) Dinner will not be served but there will be snacks and beverages.

    3) The GPS address for the Apple Barn is 4888 Hwy 194 S, Banner Elk. The large, red building is located at the corner of Lower Crab Orchard Road and Hwy 194.

    4) Parking will happen directly in front of the Apple Barn, and we will have an attendant there helping. So please be on the lookout when you arrive.

    5) Dress like you’re going to the coolest party of the year, but also be sure you can move and dance. It is a “Ball”, after all ;)

    Finally....and most importantly:

As you consider your clothing for the evening, please choose to wear something either blue or red to the show. This could be small and subtle like a bracelet or earring, or something grand like a full length red dress or a big, bold blue shirt. Your choice. Much will rest on this decision, so choose wisely...

    See you on June 8th!

  • Portal is an immersive-theater-performance-meets-scavenger-hunt, set to unfold in downtown Boone.

Groups of 6 gather in the evening, departing every 8 minutes between 5:00 - 8:00 pm from the launchpad, where they are given a unique set of clues to follow.

Depending on which type of ticket the participant has purchased, they will either be left to figure it out mostly on their own - or be guided 100% of the way.

Participants are guided through various historic and important landmarks, encountering character performances on their way to discovering that the Portal was not at all what they expected.

Not all will complete the journey, but for those that do, the Luminaries Party - a remarkable finale - awaits them. Tickets to the party may also be purchased separately, whether or not one has completed the Portal journey.

The party reveals one last tantalizing clue which unlocks many secrets, pointing to an entirely different reality and way of life for those able to see it.

The Portal experience takes approximately 60-90 minutes to complete, not including the after-party, held at a separate location, 15 minutes from downtown Boone.

  • Be ready to present your tickets and arrive early -- at least 10 minutes ahead of your appointed time.

Groups, please come together if possible. Members of groups arriving late may not be able to participate in the experience, or may need to join a different, later group.

Please do whatever you can to be on time. Making your starting time is very important. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to join a later group and participate in the experience if you come later than your appointed time

Traversing up to 1.5 miles on sidewalks and park pathways, sometimes on uneven terrain, with possible bending or crouching is required.

Travel by taxi for a short distance is an optional part of the complete experience.

Portal experience takes approximately 60-90 minutes to complete, not including the after-party held at a separate location 15 minutes outside of Boone.

Due to the interactive nature of this performance, all guests will be required to sign a liability waiver at the box office. This waiver can be reviewed HERE prior to checking out.

  • Portal leaves it up to parents and guardians to determine the suitability of the production for their children. Here are some factors to consider:

The experience involves a 1-1.5 mile walking exploration through Boone, NC, and follows a story to uncover clues that unfolds over 1.5 hours

Given certain paths involved in the show, strollers cannot be allowed; young children in backpacks/carriers are ok

There will be an optional vehicular transport during the show; a carseat and a booster seat will be available in one of the vehicles

The experience has a sci-fi element, and there will be flashing lights and futuristic characters revealed once it is dark that are not intended to be scary but may be viewed as such by some children given costume elements.

*Children under age 12 will not be permitted at the finale.

  • This is a promenade production and comfortable footwear is recommended including no heels or open toe shoes. There is no set dress code, however the fall mountain weather will likely be cool so we suggest dressing accordingly.

  • This is a rain or shine performance. If rain is in the forecast, please come prepared. We will only cancel a performance if there is thunder and lightning or very significant rainfall. Please check our social media channels (linked below) on the day of the performance for updates.
